Concept explainers
Suppose you are standing about 3 m in front of a mirror in a hair salon. You can see yourself from your head to your waist, where the end of the mirror cuts off the rest of your image. If you walk closer to the mirror (a) you will not be able to see any more of your image: (b) you will be able to see more of your image, below your waist; (c) you will see less of your image, with the cutoff rising to be above your waist.

- A lamp of height S cm is placed 40 cm in front of a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. There is a plane mirror 15 cm behind the lens. Where would you find the image when you look in the mirror?arrow_forwardAu object of height 3.0 cm is placed at 25 cm in front of a diverging lens of focal length 20 cm. Behind the diverging lens, there is a converging lens of focal length 20 cm. The distance between the lenses is 5.0 cm. Fluid the location and size of the final image.arrow_forwardAn object of height 2 cm is placed at 50 cm in front of a diverging lens of focal length 40 cm. Behind the lens, there is a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm placed 30 cm from the converging lens. Find the location, orientation, and size of the final image.arrow_forward
- An object of height 3 cm is placed at a distance of 25 cm in front of a converging lens of focal length 20 cm, to be referred to as the first lens. Behind the lens there is another converging lens of focal length 20 cm placed 10 cm from the first lens. There is a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm placed 50 cm from the second lens. Find the location, orientation, and size of the final image.arrow_forwardUnder what circumstances will an image be located at the focal point of a spherical lens or mirror?arrow_forwardA nearsighted man cannot see objects clearly beyond 20 cm from his eyes. How close must he stand to a mirror in order to see what he is doing when he shaves?arrow_forward
- Figure P38.43 shows a concave meniscus lens. If |r1| = 8.50 cm and |r2| = 6.50 cm, find the focal length and determine whether the lens is converging or diverging. The lens is made of glass with index of refraction n = 1.55. CHECK and THINK: How do your answers change if the object is placed on the right side of the lens? FIGURE P38.43arrow_forwardWhy are diverging mirrors often used for rearview mirrors in vehicles? What is the main disadvantage of using such a mirror compared with a flat one?arrow_forwardSuppose a man stands in front of a mirror as shown in Figure 25.50. His eyes are 1.65 m above the floor, and the top of his head is 0.13 m higher. Find the height above the floor of the top and bottom of the smallest mirror in which he can see both the top of his head and his feet. How is this distance related to the man’s height? Figure 25.50 A full-length mirror is one in which you can see all of yourself. It need not be as big as you, and its size is independent of your distance from it.arrow_forward
- The disk of the Sun subtends an angle of 0.533 at the Earth. What are (a) the position and (b) the diameter of the solar image formed by a concave spherical mirror with a radius of curvature of magnitude 3.00 m?arrow_forwardShow that, for a flat mirror, hi=ho, given that the image is the same distance behind the mirror as the distance of the object from the mirror.arrow_forward
