Light from a helium-neon laser (λ = 633 nm) passes through a circular aperture and is observed on a screen 4.0 m behind the aperture. The width of the central maximum is 2.5 cm. What is the diameter (in mm) of the hole?
There is a monochromatic light with wavelength λ = 529 nm shines down on a plano-convex lens lying on a piece of plate glass, shown in the figure below. When viewing from above, one sees a set of concentric dark and bright fringes.
If the radius r of the 9th bright ring from the center is measured to be 0.256 cm, what is the radius of curvature of the lens?
Once dark adapted, the pupil of your eye is approximately 7 mm in diameter. The headlights of an oncoming car are 120 cm apart. If the resolution of your eye is limited only by diffraction, at what distance are the two headlights marginally resolved? Assume the light’s wavelength in air is 600 nm andthe index of refraction inside the eye is 1.33. (Your eye is not really good enough to resolve headlights at this distance, due to aberrations in the lens.)
