Chapter 3.4, Problem 19WDYL
Summary Introduction

To describe:

The process of glycolysis and to determine the place if it needs oxygen and its net chemical reaction and the net energy transfer.

Concept introduction:

Respiration comprises two parts breathing and breakdown of food to liberate energy. Breathing occurs in the respiratory tract from nostrils to alveoli and the process of breakdown of food to release energy takes place in the cell. The process of cellular respiration consists of three cycles which are glycolysis, Krebs’ or citric acid cycle, and the electron transport cycle.

All of the following are true statements concerning glycolysis EXCEPT: It occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. It uses, as well as produces, ATP It produces ATP by oxidative phosphorylation. It involves the conversion of a molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid. It is also called the Embden-Meyerhof pathway. Question 20
In detail
Describe the breakdown of sucrose in the body and the revelant pathways of the byproducts. In the breakdown, be sure to use the following terms: active site, disaccharide, enzyme-substrate complex, fructose, glucose, glycosidic bond, hydrolysis, product, substrate, sucrase (the enzyme that splits sucrose), and sucrose. Also explain what happens to glucose and fructose in the liver.
