An open box is to be made from a square piece of cardboard whose sides are 14 inches long, by cutting squares of equal size from the corners and bending up the sides. Determine the size of the square that is to be cut out so that the volume may be a maximum.
A candy box is made from a piece of cardboard that measures 37 by 20 inches. Squares of equal size will be cut out of each corner. The sides will then be folded up to form a rectangular box. What size square should be cut from each corner to obtain maximum volume?
A box with a square base and an open top must hold 32 cubic inches of volume. Find the dimensions of the box that require the least amount of material (ie minimize the surface area of the topless box). Do not worry about the thickness of the material of the waste from construction.
