Patient X is a 5-year-old boy, who had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. While he was in the bathroom with his mother, he suddenly holds his stomach and starts to scream that his stomach is hurting very much. The patient’s mother pulls the alarm while his pain is increasing and needed assistance to get off the toilet. He received a smaller dose of pain relief medication that seems to take no action, while patient X still screams and lies in a fetal position while holding his stomach and says his pain seems never to go away.

Explanation of Solution

One of the nurses who are witnessing these situations is just a trainee nurse and feels bad for the child patient, who is screaming in pain. One of the best actions of the trainee nurse is to contact the care nurse who is caring for the patient and can advocate on behalf of him. The nurse can act an advocate for the patient and can help the patient to be relieved with pain. The nurse needs to get attention of the physician to enquire of this situation.

Only the adequacy the nurse faces is that she is not still a Pain Relief Nurse (PRN) and only a trainee nurse. Moreover, she has that compassion of the nurse who cares for her patients.

The action of the nurse like acting as a nurse advocate of course had a successful outcome. Since, the patient only received a small dose of medication that seems to take an action and the patient is still in pain and screaming continuously. Due to repeatedly advocating for the patient, the physician ordered for some more of pain relief medications for the patient.
