Refer to Problem 37 for its description of the reflected intensity of light normally incident on an interface between two transparent media. (a) For light normally incident on an interface between vacuum and a transparent medium of index n, show that the intensity S2 of the transmitted light is given by S2/S1 = 4n/(n + 1)2. (b) Light travels perpendicularly through a diamond slab, surrounded by air, with parallel surfaces of entry and exit. Apply the transmission fraction in part (a) to find the approximate overall transmission through the slab of diamond, as a percentage. Ignore light reflected back and forth within the slab.

- Both sides of a uniform film that has index of refraction n and thickness d are in contact with air. For normal incidence of light, an intensity minimum is observed in the reflected light at λ2 and an intensity maximum is observed at λ1, where λ1 > λ2. (a) Assuming no intensity minima are observed between λ1 and λ2, find an expression for the integer m in Equations 27.13 and 27.14 in terms of the wavelengths λ1 and λ2. (b) Assuming n = 1.40, λ1 = 500 nm, and λ2 = 370 nm, determine the best estimate for the thickness of the film.arrow_forwardLight enters a prism of crown glass and refracts at an angle of 5.00 with respect to the normal at the interface. The crown glass has a mean index of refraction of 1.51. It is combined with one flint glass prism (n = 1.65) to produce no net deviation. a. Find the apex angle of the flint glass. b. Assume the index of refraction for violet light (v = 430 nm) is nv = 1.528 and the index of refraction for red light (r = 768 nm) is nr = 1.511 for crown glass. For flint glass using the same wavelengths, nv = 1.665 and nr = 1.645. Find the net dispersion.arrow_forwardLight traveling in a medium of index of refraction n1 is incident on another medium having an index of refraction n2. Under which of the following conditions can total internal reflection occur at the interface of the two media? (a) The indices of refraction have the relation n2 n1. (b) The indices of refraction have the relation n1 n2. (c) Light travels slower in the second medium than in the first. (d) The angle of incidence is less than the critical angle. (e) The angle of incidence must equal the angle of refraction.arrow_forward
- A goldfish is swimming inside a spherical bowl of water having an index of refraction n = 1.333. Suppose the goldfish is p = 10.0 cm from the wall of a howl of radius |R| = 15.0 cm. as in Figure P23.22. Neglecting the refraction of light caused by the wall of the bowl, determine the apparent distance of the goldfish from the wall according to an observer outside the bowl. Figure P23.22arrow_forwardWhy is the following situation impossible? A technician is measuring the index of refraction of a solid material by observing the polarization of light reflected from its surface. She notices that when a light beam is projected from air onto the material surface, the reflected light is totally polarized parallel to the surface when the incident angle is 41.0°.arrow_forwardThe index of refraction for red light in water is 1.331 and that for blue light is 1.34. - Starting from a point A, a light wave travels 30 mm in air, then 10 mm in water of refractive index nW=1.33 , followed by 10 mm in glass of refractive index nG=1.60 , then a further 20mm in air to point B. The optical path length from A to B is: (give your answer in mm to 1 d.p.)arrow_forwardThe light from a krypton laser has a wavelength of 647.1 nm in air. As the light travels from air into acrylic glass (n =1.491), calculate (a) its speed in acrylic glass, (b) its wavelength in acrylic glass, (c) its critical angle in acrylic glass surrounded by air, and (d) its frequency.arrow_forwardA light beam is directed parallel to the axis of a hollow cylindrical tube. When the tube contains only air, it takes the light 8.72 ns to travel the length of the tube, but when the tube is filled with a transparent jelly, it takes the light 2.04 ns longer to travel its length. What is the refractive index of the jelly? NOTE: The final answer should be 1.23.arrow_forward
