Chapter 34, Problem 51GP
Suppose the mirrors in a Michelson interferometer are perfectly aligned and the path lengths to mirrors M1 and M2 are identical. With these initial conditions, an observer sees a bright maximum at the center of the viewing area. Now one of the mirrors is moved a distance x. Determine a formula for the intensity at the center of the viewing area as a function of x, the distance the movable mirror is moved from the initial position.

Two light sources of identical strength are placed 10m apart. An object is to be placed at a point P on a line l, parallel to the line joining the light sources and at a distance d meters from it (see the figure). We want to locate P on, so that the intensity of illumination is minimized. We need to use the fact that the intensity of illumination for a single source is directly proportional to the strength of the source and inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source.
a) Find an expression for the intensity l(x) at the point P.
b) If d = 5m, use graphs of l(x) and l'(x) to show that the intensity is minimized when x = 5m, that is, when P is at the midpoint of l.
c) If d = 10m, show that the intensity (perhaps surprisingly) is not minimized at the midpoint.
d) Somewhere between d = 5m and d = 10m there is a transitional value of d at which the point of minimal illumination abruptly changes. Estimate this value of d by graphical methods. Then find the exact value…
A light beam is travelling in an isotropic absorbing medium, and it is found that after travelling a
distance of 15 cm in the medium, the light intensity has reduced to one-quarter of the incident
intensity.
Calculate the absorption coefficient a of the medium.
A light of wavelength 4051 Å is
incident normally on a glass slab of thickness
5 cm and R.I. 1.6. The beam takes the same
time to travel from the source to the incident
surface as it takes to travel through the glass
slab. What is the distance of source from the
incident surface. (given : C, = 3 x 10° m/s)
