Answer to Problem 1A

The vernier micrometer reading is 0.188in.

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The micrometer scale reading is 0.001in, the barrel reading is 0.175in and the thimble reading is 0.008in.

The below figure represent the setting of a gage.

EBK MATHEMATICS FOR MACHINE TECHNOLOGY, Chapter 35, Problem 1A

Figure-(1)

Write the expression for the Vernier scale coincidence.

  VR=GR×x   .........(I)

Here, the graduated scale reading is GR and the micrometer scale is x.

Write the expression for the vernier scale reading.

  VSR=BR+TR+VR   .........(II)

Here, thimble scale reading is TR and the barrel scale reading is BR.

Here, barrel scale reading is BR.

Substitute GR×x for VR in Equation (II).

  VSR=BR+TR+(GR×x) ........ (III)

Calculation:

Substitute 0.175in for BR, 0.008in for TR, 5 for GR, and 0.001in for x in Equation (III).

  VSR=(0.175in)+(0.008in)+(5×0.001in)=(0.175in)+(0.008in)+(0.005in)=0.188in

Conclusion:

The vernier micrometer reading is 0.188in.
