Chapter 35, Problem 1RQ

How many degrees of crankshaft rotation are there between cylinder firings on an inline four-cylinder engine, an inline six-cylinder engine, and a V-8 engine?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Identify the crank rotation degrees between cylinder firings in the given engines.

Explanation of Solution

Inline four cylinder engine:

In a 4-cylinder engine where all the cylinders are mounted in a single line, the piston moves in pairs. The pistons of cylinders 1 and 4 move together and the pistons of cylinders 2 and 3 form a pair. With this arrangement, the engine will fire each cylinder after 180° rotation of the crankshaft.

Inline six cylinder engine:

An inline six cylinder engine is a perfectly balanced engine. The crankshafts ride on 4 or 7 main bearings and use six crank throws in three planes at 120 degrees apart. With this arrangement, the engine will fire each cylinder after 120° rotation of the crankshaft.

V-8 engine:

The V-8 engine crankshaft has two planes and one throw every 90 degrees resulting in a total of four throws. The engine operates smoothly with firing at each 90° rotation of the crankshaft.

In a six cylinder in-line two-stroke cycle Diesel engine, the cylinders are pitched 150 mm apart. The crank length is 100 mm and the ratio of connecting rod to crank is 4.5. The reciprocating mass per line is 1 kg. The engine speed is 2121 rpm. Two possible firing order for this engine are 1-5-3-6-2-4 and 1-4-5-2-3-6. As a young engineer, you have been tasked to evaluate the most suitable firing order for this engine. Your evaluation should include examination of the engine for balance of primary and secondary forces and couples for the given firing order. Apart from examining the engine, you need to justify why one firing order is superior to the other.
The crank radius of a single-cylinder IC engine is 60 mm and the diameter of the cylinder is 80 mm. What is the swept volume of the cylinder?
In a four-cylinder engine with a firing order of 1-3-4-2, what stroke is piston #4 on when #1 is on its compression stroke?
