Chapter 35, Problem 57CP

Consider the lens–mirror arrangement shown in Figure P35.55. There are two final image positions to the left of the lens of focal length fL. One image position is due to light traveling from the object to the left and passing through the lens. The other image position is due to light traveling to the right from the object, reflecting from the mirror of focal length fM and then passing through the lens. For a given object position p between the lens and the mirror and measured with respect to the lens, there are two separation distances d between the lens and mirror that will cause the two images described above to be at the same location. Find both positions.

You are trying to photograph a bird sitting on a tree branch, but a tall hedge is blocking your view. However, as the drawing shows, a plane mirror reflects light from the bird into your camera. If x = 3.4 m and y = 4.8 m in the drawing, for what distance must you set the focus of the camera lens in order to snap a sharp picture of the bird's image?
A 1.0 cm tall light bulb is placed 50 cm from a convex lens that has a focal distance of 40 cm. Which of the following statements is true of the bulb's image?   a. The image is virtual, the distance to the image is 12.5 cm and the height of the image is 0.25 cm tall.   b. The image is virtual, the image distance is -200 cm and the height of the image is 4.0 cm tall.   c. The image is real, the distance to the image is 22.2 cm and the height of the image is 0.44 cm tall.   d. The image is real, the distance to the image is 200 cm and the height of the image is 4.0 cm tall.   e. The image is virtual, the distance to the image is 22.2 cm and the height of the image is 0.44 cm tall.
Big bird is frightened to see a magnified image of himself in a spherical mirror of focal length 100 cm. He is standing 50 cm in front of the mirror. At what location did he see his image? What kind of spherical mirror is he looking at? What is the magnification of his image?
