Summary Introduction

For the removal of feces, usually, an enema solution is introduced into the large intestine. This instilled enema solution enlarges the intestine and aggravates the intestinal mucosa and this increase the peristalsis. The enema is further classified into cleansing and oil retention enemas. For cleansing enemas, several types of solutions are used such as normal saline solution, soap solution, tap water and hypertonic solution. For a variety of reasons, the oil retention enemas are kept in the bowel for a constant time period. Generally, 150-200 mL of oil retention enema is given to the adults for lubricate intestinal mucosa and stool, to making defecation uncomplicated.
