To describe:
A 79-year-old patient is currently under treatment for osteomyelitis. His medication order contains intravenous (IV) imipenem/cilastatin, Lisinopril (oral), phenytoin (oral) and a prn order (when needed) for acetaminophen for a temperature above 101°F (38.3° C) or for pain. The staff is reviewing the medication history and new orders of the patient. The first action that will be taken by the staff nurse.
Concept introduction:
Osteomyelitis is a bacterial or fungal infection (rarely) of bones. Common symptoms of this infection are pain, weakness, fever, and overlying redness. Diabetes IV drug use, trauma, and splenectomy induce the risk of developing osteomyelitis. This infection may be treated with antibiotics or surgery in some severe cases.
