Chapter 4, Problem 1FP
To determine

The mass flow of water

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The width of the rectangular tube (B) is 60 mm.

The average velocity of the flow (V)  is 16 m/s.

The density of the water (ρw)  is 1,000kg/m3.

The depth of flow (y) is 50m m.

Calculation:

Calculate the depth of the tube perpendicular to the flow (D).

  D=ysinθD=50 mm×sin60°=50 mm×1 m1000 mm×sin60°=0.043m

Calculate the area of the rectangular tube A.

  A=B×DA=60 mm×0.043=60 mm×1m1000 mm×0.043=0.00259m2

Calculate the mass flow m˙.

  m˙=ρAVm˙=1,000kg/m3×16m/s×16m/s=41.6kg/s

Thus, the mass flow of water is 41.6kg/s_.
