Case 2

In addition to the corticosteroid therapy, what factor in Fick's law was used therapeutically to improve the patient's oxygenation status?

Summary Introduction

To review:

In addition to corticosteroid therapy, the factor in Fick’s law that was used therapeutically to improve the patient’s oxygenation status.

Introduction:

In the given case, a 78-year-old woman is brought into the hospital. She has alveolar fibrosis and thickening. An X-ray image of the patient’s lungs was taken. An increase in the alveolar density was found. This was caused by the lung fibrosis condition. Her heart rate was recorded as 105 beats per minute and her respiratory rate was 24 breaths per minute.

Please refer to Clinical Application Case-2 for further information.

Explanation

The Fick’s law equation relates the thickness indirectly to the amount of diffusion. It also relates the area of tissue, pressure difference across membranes, and the diffusion constant directly to the amount of diffusion. The equation involved is given below:

 V gasAD(P1-P2)T

where T refers to the thickness, A refers to the alveolar surface area, and D refers to the diffusion constant
