Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The number of stereoisomers in muscarine is to be determined. The number of stereoisomers in which one of the substituents on the ring is trans to the other two is to be determined. The structural formula of muscarine having the configuration
Concept introduction:
For a particular stereoisomer, the maximum number of stereoisomers
When determining the configuration, the molecule is oriented such that the lowest ranked atom points away from the observer.
The order of decreasing priority of the three other atoms or groups is determined. If it traces a clockwise path, the configuration is R, and if it traces a counterclockwise path, the configuration is S.
In cycloalkanes, the groups that lie on the opposite side of the ring are trans to each other.

- The shrub ma huang (Section 5.4A) contains two biologically active stereoisomers—ephedrine and pseudoephedrine—with two stereogenic centers as shown in the given structure. Ephedrine is one component of a once-popular combination drug used by body builders to increase energy and alertness, whereas pseudoephedrine is a nasal decongestant. a.Draw the structure of naturally occurring (−)-ephedrine, which has the 1R,2S configuration. b.Draw the structure of naturally occurring (+)-pseudoephedrine, which has the 1S,2S configuration. c.How are ephedrine and pseudoephedrine related? d.Draw all other stereoisomers of (−)-ephedrine and (+)pseudoephedrine, and give the R,S designation for all stereogenic centers. e.How is each compound drawn in part (d) related to (−)-ephedrine?arrow_forwardCycloheptatrienyl radical (C7H7∙) contains a cyclic, completely conjugated system of π electrons. Is it aromatic? Is it antiaromatic? Explain.arrow_forwardFollowing is the structure of miconazole, the active antifungal agent in a number of over-the-counter preparations, including Monistat, that are used to treat vaginal yeast infections. One of the compounds needed for the synthesis of miconazole is the trichloro derivative of toluene shown on its right. (a) Show how this derivative can be synthesized from toluene. - A difficult problem in the synthesis of PGF2α is the introduction of the OH group at C15 in the desired configuration. a. Label this stereogenic center as R or S. b. A well-known synthesis of PGF2α involves reaction of A with Zn(BH4)2, a metal hydride reagent similar in reactivity to NaBH4, to form two isomeric products, B and C. Draw their structures and indicate their stereochemical relationship. d. Suggest a reagent to convert A to the single stereoisomer X.arrow_forwardThe LD50 (“Lethal Dose, 50 %”) is a value used in toxicology which gives the amount of a substance required to kill 50 % of a test population. It is usually reported based on body weight. For racemic carvone LD50 is reported as 1640 mg/kg. 1. Would it consider carvone to be toxic to an average person? Explain. 2. Would it be expected this the LD50 value to be the same for each enantiomer? Explain at the molecular level in stereochemical terms.arrow_forward2-Acetoxycyclohexyl tosylate reacts with acetate ion to form 1,2-cyclohexanediol diacetate. The reaction is stereospecific—that is, the stereoisomers obtained as products depend on the stereoisomer used as a reactant. Recall that because 2-acetoxycyclohexyl tosylate has two asymmetric centers, it has four stereoisomers—two are cis and two are trans. Explain the following observations:a. Both cis reactants form an optically active trans product, but each cis reactant forms a different trans product.b. Both trans reactants form the same racemic mixture.c. A trans reactant is more reactive than a cis reactant.arrow_forward

A compound named ephedrine has been isolated from these herbs and found to be a potent dilator of air passages in the lungs. a. How many stereoisomers does ephedrine have? b.
