It is better to acknowledge different styles of communication to make everyone more comfortable in the interaction. Women generally communicate in closer proximity to other people than men, and adults routinely enter the personal space of children. Eastern cultures usually assume more personal space than Western. Understanding multicultural factors in communication (such as the importance of maintaining or averting direct eye contact) can help with an avoidance of communication misunderstandings or sending unintentional signals.
