Chapter 4, Problem 4.4P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mean value of 69Ga/71Ga has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Mean:

The arithmetic mean (also called average) is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. It is calculated by summing the observed numerical values of a variable in a set of data and then dividing the total by the number of observations involved.

Computation of mean:

If x1, x2.....xn be n values.

The mean value is calculated as,

  Mean = i=1nxin

Here, n is total number of values and i=1nxi represents sum of all given values.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The standard deviation and the relative standard deviation values has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Standard deviation:

The standard deviation of a random variable X of size n is defined as,

s = i=1n(xi-x¯)2n-1, where xi is the ith observation and x¯ is the sample mean.

The standard deviation measures the absolute variability of a distribution.

RSD = Sx¯×100, here RSD is relative standard deviation, S is standard deviation and x¯ is mean.

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The 99% confidence interval for sample 8 has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The confidence interval is determined as follows,

    μ=x¯+_tsn

Here, x¯ is mean value, s is standard deviation, n is number of values and t is Students, t for 95% confidence and n1 is degrees of freedom.
