(a) What is the strength of the weak nuclear force relative to the strong nuclear force? (b) What is the strength of the weak nuclear force relative to the electromagnetic force? Since the weak nuclear force acts at only very short distances, such as inside nuclei, where the strong and electromagnetic forces also act, it might seem surprising that we have any knowledge of it at all. We have such knowledge because the weak nuclear force is responsible for beta decay, a type of nuclear decay not explained by other forces.

Interaction between an electric field and a magnetic field.
It is the STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE of the neutron that keeps the nucleons of the atom together if nucleons can be brought to within 1 diameter of a proton or Neutron (3 to 5 femtometers (x 10^-15m)). The STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE is strongest of the 4 fundamental forces but it has the shortest range. Use the "Strength" factor listed in the chart to determine how many times greater is the STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE compared to the: a) Electromagnetic Force b) Weak Force c) Gravity . (Hint: use the simple strategy taught in class of BIGGER/smaller to determine the factor that a bigger number is compared to a smaller number)
