Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The strength and weaknesses of Rutherford model of an atom needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Rutherford is one of the great whose contribution is very important in the Atomic science.
Answer to Problem 57A
The strengths of Rutherford model of an atom is that atoms nucleus is surrounded by negatively charged particles called electrons, these electrons revolve around the nucleus in a fixed circular path called orbits.
The drawback of Rutherford model of an atom is that he couldn't explain why negatively charged electrons remain in orbit when as they should fall into the positively charged nucleus while revolving as every moving particle release energy.
Explanation of Solution
Rutherford atomic model explained the particles present in an atom and how they revolve. He claimed that the positively charged particles and most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in an extremely small volume. He also claimed that the electrons surrounding the nucleus revolve around it with very high speed in circular paths.
