Chapter 4, Problem 5CQ
In a head-on collision between a compact hybrid car and a gas-guzzling SUV, which vehicle is acted upon by the greater force? So why are people m the smaller car more likely to get injured than those in the large one. assuming that both cars are equally strong?

If Alice who has a mass of 55.0 KG and is it raining at 25.0 m/s had not been wearing a seatbelt and not had an air bag then windshield would have stopped her head in 0.002s. What average force would the windshield have exerted on her?
WHEN AN 18-WHEELER COLLIDES HEAD-ON WITH A COMPACT CAR, WHAT DETERMINES WHICH WAY THE WRECKAGE GOES AFTER THE COLLISION? WHY ARE THE OCCUPANTS OF THE CAR MUCH MORE LIKELY TO BE INJURED THAN THOSE OF THE TRUCK?
Most of us know intuitively that in a head-on colli-sion between a large dump truck and a subcompact car,
you are better off being in the truck than in the car. Whyis this? Many people imagine that the collision forceexerted on the car is much greater than that exerted onthe truck. To substantiate this view, they point out that thecar is crushed, whereas the truck is only dented. This ideaof unequal forces, of course, is false; Newton’s third lawtells us that both objects are acted upon by forces of thesame magnitude. The truck suffers less damage because
it is made of stronger metal. But what about the two driv-ers? Do they experience the same forces? To answer this
question, suppose that each vehicle is initially moving at
8.00 m/s and that they undergo a perfectly inelastic head-on collision. Each driver has mass 80.0 kg. Including the
masses of the drivers, the total masses of the vehicles are
800 kg for the car and 4 000 kg for the truck. If the colli-sion time is 0.120 s, what…
