Chapter 4, Problem 66P
An article was published [13] concerning the incidence of cardiac death attributable to the earthquake in Los Angeles County on January 17, 1994. In the week before the earthquake there were an average of 15.6 cardiac deaths per day in Los Angeles County. On the day of the earthquake, there were 51 cardiac deaths.
What is the maximum number of cardiac deaths that could have occurred on the day of the earthquake to be consistent with the rate of cardiac deaths in the past week? (Hint: Use a cutoff probability of .05 to determine the maximum number.)

Do Left-Handers Die Earlier? According to a study published in the Journal of the American Public Health Association, lefthanded people do not die at an earlier age than right-handed people, contrary to the conclusion of a highly publicized report done 2 years earlier. The investigation involved a 6-year study of 3800 people in East Boston older than age 65. Researchers at Harvard University and the National Institute of Aging found that the “lefties” and “righties” died at exactly the same rate. “There was no difference, period,” said Dr. J. Guralnik, an epidemiologist at the institute and one of the coauthors of the report.
According to a newspaper study of more than 1 million medical dispatches from 2007 to 2012, the 911 response time for medical aid varies dramatically across a city. Under national standards adopted by the city's fire department, rescuers are supposed to arrive within six minutes to almost all medical emergencies. But the newspaper analysis found that in affluent hillside communities of the city, firefighters failed to hit that mark nearly 85% of the time.
The following data show the response times, in minutes, for 10 emergency calls in the Griffith Park neighborhood.
