Concept introduction:
In order to determine the configuration at a chiral center, the atoms or groups attached to it are first assigned priorities on the basis of their
If two atoms attached to the chiral center have the same atomic number, then they are compared on the basis of the atomic numbers of the other atoms attached to them.
Multiple bonds are replicated as substituents on the atom.
The molecule is oriented such that the lowest ranked group/atom points away from the observer.
The configuration is R, if the remaining three groups in the order of decreasing priority trace a clockwise path.
The absolute configuration is S, if the remaining three groups in the order of decreasing priority trace a counter clockwise path.

- Classify the sigmatropic rearrangement with bracketed numbers.arrow_forwardThe Diels–Alder reaction between butadiene and dimethyl maleate yields a ring structure, as shown in the product. Complete the structure by drawing any missing bonds and indicating the stereochemistry of the new stereocenters.arrow_forwardI would like to know what the stereochemistry would be for thisarrow_forward
- Answer the following question for 1,3,5- hexatriene, the conjugated triene containing six carbons. Within the HOMO, is the phase at the terminal carbons the same or different?arrow_forwardI am slightly confused on the naming of ethers. How come for chloromethoxymethane, it is not methoxychloride? Isn't chloride more complex than the alkyl group, so it should be placed at the root? Or is it not placed at the root because chloride is not an alkyl group at all?arrow_forwardAs the extent of electron delocalization into the ring increases, the geometry at nitrogen flattens. p-Nitroaniline, for example, is planar. Write a resonance contributor for p-nitroaniline that shows how the nitro group increases electron delocalization.arrow_forward
- Answer the following question pertaining to the reaction of maleic anhydride and 1,3-butadiene: - Which conformation of 1,3-butadiene, s-cis or s-trans, is thermodynamically preferred and why?arrow_forwardRank the following sets of substituents according to the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog sequence rules.arrow_forwardUsing the Frost Circle method to outline the molecular orbitals of cyclobutadiene, and identify whether it is aromatic, antiaromatic or non-aromatic. - Give cis/trans-, E/Z-, R/S- and/or M/P-descriptor(s) for each of the following compounds:arrow_forwardThe NMR spectrum of bromocyclohexane indicates a low field signal (1H) at δ 4.16. To room temperature, this signal is a singlet, but at -75 ° C it separates into two peaks of unequal area (but totaling one proton): δ 3.97 and δ 4.64, in ratio 4.6: 1.0. How do you explain the doubling in two peaks? According to the generalization of the previous problem, what conformation of the molecule predominates (at -75 ° C)? What percentage of the molecules does it correspond to?
