Answer to Problem 77AP

The uncertainty in measuring the radial position of electron of Hydrogen is 0.866a0_.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for the average of the square of distance between electron and proton.

    r2=all space|ψ|2r2dV                                                                                          (I)

Here, r2 is the average of the square of distance between electron and proton, ψ is the wave function of Hydrogen in ground state, r is the distance between proton and electron, and dV is the volume of the space.

Use expression (I) to find the average of square of distance between electron and proton of the Hydrogen atom in 1s state.

    r2=all spaceψ1sr2ψ1sdV                                                                                 (II)

Here, ψ1s is the wave function of electron in 1s state of Hydrogen, ψ1s is the complex conjugate of ψ1s.

Write the expression for the wave function of Hydrogen atom in 1s state.

    ψ1s=1πa03era0                                                                                               (III)

Here, a0 is the Bohr radius of Hydrogen atom.

Write the expression for complex conjugate of ψ1s.

    ψ1s=1πa03era0                                                                                                (IV)

1s state has a spherical symmetry.

Write the expression for the volume of the spherical s orbital state.

    V=43πr3 (V)

Here, V is the volume.

Take the derivative of volume with respect to the radius of the sphere and obtain dV.

    dVdr=ddr(43πr3)=43π×3r2=4πr2dV=4πr2dr                                                                                              (VI)

Use expression (III), (IV) and (VI) in (II).

  r2=all space(1πa03era0)2r2(1πa03era0)4πr2dr                                         (VII)

Simplify equation (VII) and evaluate the integral from zero to infinity.

  r2=4a030r4e2ra0dr                                                                                     (VIII)

Integral in equation (VIII) is similar to the general form 0xneaxdx, which have the general solution as,

    0xneaxdx=n!an+1                                                                                             (IX)

Compare expressions (VIII) and (IX).

    n=4a=2a0

Use expressions (VIII) and (IX) to find the solution of (VIII).

  r2=4a030r4e2ra0dr=4a03×4!(2a0)4+1=96a0232=3a02                                                                                          (X)

Write the expression for the root mean square uncertainty in r.

    Δr=r2r2                                                                                             (XI)

Write the expression to find r.

    r=all spaceψ1srψ1sdV                                                                                  (XII)

Use expression (III), (IV), (VI) in expression (XIII) to find r.

    r=all space(1πa03era0)r(1πa03era0)4πr2dr                                         (XIII)

Simplify equation (XIII) and integrate from zero to infinity.

    r=4a030r3e2ra0dr                                                                                       (XIV)

Compare expressions (XIV) and (IX).

    n=3a=2a0

Use expression (IX) to solve (XIII).

    r=4a030r3e2ra0dr=4a03×3!(2a0)3+1=3a02                                                                                          (XV)

Conclusion:

Substitute 3a02 for r, and 3a02 for r2 in equation (XI) to find Δr.

    Δr=r2r2=3a02(3a02)2=0.866a0

Therefore, the uncertainty in measuring the radial position of electron of Hydrogen is 0.866a0_.
