Introduction:

The resting membrane potential of the giant squid is around −50 millivolts (mV). The negative sign indicates that the inside of the cell is more negative than the outside. When the membrane potential becomes less negative, the condition is known as depolarization of the membrane.

The opening of the sodium channels results in passage of the sodium ions inside the cell. Thus, the membrane potential becomes less negative. The BTX (batrachotoxin) causes depolarization of the membrane.
