Making silos A grain silo consists of a cylindrical concrete tower surmounted by a metal hemispherical dome. The metal in the dome costs 1.5 times as much as the concrete (per unit of surface area). If the volume of the silo is 750 m3, what are the dimensions of the silo (radius and height of the cylindrical tower) that minimize the cost of the materials? Assume the silo has no floor and no flat ceiling under the dome.

- Street light post The post of a street light is shaped like a truncated cone, as shown in the picture below. It is a large cone minus a smaller top cone. The large cone is 30 feet tall with base radius 1 foot. The smaller cone is 10 feet tall with base radius of 0.5 feet. To the nearest tenth, (a) find the volume of the large cone. (b) find the volume of the small cone. (c) find the volume of the post by subtracting the volume of the small cone from the volume of the large cone.arrow_forwardConstruction Costs The town of Foxton lies 10 mi north of an abandoned east-west road that runs through Grimley, as shown in the figure. The point on the abandoned road closed to Foxton is 40 mi from Grimley. Country officials are about to build a new road connecting the two towns. They have determined that restoring the old road would cost 100,000 per mile, while building a new road would cost 200, 000 per mile. How much of the abandoned road should be used as indicated in the figure if the officials intend to spend exactly 6.8 million? Would it cost less than this amount to build a new road connecting the towns directly?arrow_forward
