A piston–cylinder device initially contains 2 kg of refrigerant-134a at 800 kPa and 80°C. At this state, the piston is touching on a pair of stops at the top. The mass of the piston is such that a 500-kPa pressure is required to move it. A valve at the bottom of the cylinder is opened, and R-134a is withdrawn from the cylinder. After a while, the piston is observed to move and the valve is closed when half of the refrigerant is withdrawn from the cylinder and the temperature in the tank drops to 20°C. Determine the work done.
The radiator of a steam heating system has a volume of 20 L and is filled with superheated water vapor at 200 kPa and 200°C. At this moment both the inlet and the exit valves to the radiator are closed. After a while it is observed that the temperature of the steam drops to 80°C as a result of heat transfer to the room air, which is at 21°C. Assuming the surroundings to be at 0°C, determine the maximum amount of heat that can be supplied to the room if this heat from the radiator is supplied to a heat engine that is driving a heat pump. Assume the heat engine operates between the radiator and the surroundings.
Refrigerant-134a at 320 kPa and 40°C undergoes an isothermal process in a closed system until its quality is 45 percent. On a per-unit-mass basis, determine how much work and heat transfer are required.
