Concept explainers
The populations of two countries are given for January 1, 2000, and for January 1, 2010.
a. Write a function of the form
Country | Population in 2000 (millions) | Population in 2010 (millions) |
|
---|---|---|---|
Switzerland | 7.3 | 7.8 | |
Israel | 6.7 | 7.7 |
b. Use the models from pan (a) to approximate the population on January 1, 2020, for each country. Round to the nearest hundred thousand.
c. Israel had fewer people than Switzerland in the year 2000, yet from the result of pan (b), Israel would have more people in the year 2020? Why?
d. Use the models from pan (a) to predict the year during which each population would reach 10 million if this trend continues.

- Poultry Farming Researchers at Iowa State University and the University of Arkansas have developed a piecewise function that can be used to estimate the body weight in grams of a male broiler during the first 56 days of life according to W(t)={48+3.64t+0.6363t2+0.00963t3if1t28,1004+65.8tif28t56, Where t is the age of the chicken in days. Source: Poultry Science. a. Determine the weight of a male broiler that is 25 days old . b. Is W(t) a continuous function? c. Use a graphing calculator to graph W(t) on [1,56] by [0,3000].Comment on the accuracy of the graph. d. Comment on why researchers use two different types of functions to estimate the weight of a chicken at various ages.arrow_forwardUse your schools library, the Internet, or some other reference source to find real-life applications of approximations of functions.arrow_forward
