Question
Chapter 46, Problem 2AC
Summary Introduction
To explain:
Whether an individual would expect a predominance of long-day, short-day, or day-neutral plants near the equator.
Introduction:
Photoperiodism categorizes plants into long-day, short-day, and day-neutral plants. Plants that flower when they reach proper developmental stage after germination independent of photoperiod are known as day-neutral plants. Plants that flower when the night length is more than their critical photoperiod are called short-day plants. Plants that flower when the night length is less than their critical photoperiod are called long-day plants.

You are visiting Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge, Georgia, to pick apples. The apple tree is an example of a deciduous (sheds leaves seasonally) angiosperm. Identify the major sugar source and sink of a general deciduous angiosperm during the following season:
A) Summer
B) Early Spring
Using the provided figure, describe the importance of the two phytochrome systems in controlling de-etiolation and green stem elongation under full sun and shade. Include the key mechanisms and temporal changes in control of this process.
A team of researchers investigated the effects of phosphorous availability and light intensity on an angiosperm species. Seeds of the angiosperm were divided into four equal groups. Groups 1 and 2 were exposed to 200 μmol, and Groups 3 and 4 were exposed to 500 μmol. Groups 2 and 4 also received a phosphorous (P) solution. After 20 days, all plants were weighed, and the average dry weight of each group was calculated. The results are in the table below.
Group 1(200 μmol, no P)
Group 2(200 μmol, + P)
Group 3 (500 μmol, no P)
Group 4 (500 μmol + P)
