To examine: The similar events occurring in human males and females.
Introduction: Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs in reproductive cells. This results in formation of four daughter cells. The meiotic process is called reductional division because it generates haploid cells that have half the chromosome number to that of parent cell. In this process, four daughter cells are produced, but only one form egg cell and the other three daughter cells degenerate. Sperm production also occurs by meiosis, but unlike in females four daughter spermatids are formed. Meiosis in male reproductive cell is complete once started, but in female reproductive cells meiosis gets interrupted.

Check ALL that apply a) YO b) XYY c) XXY d) XXX e) XO Polar bodies are formed during Male meiosis Female meiosis Both male and female meiosis Neither male nor female meiosis A brain cell in a normal human male would have a Y chromosome. a) True b) Falsearrow_forwardDuring oogenesis, meiosis results in:A) four equally sized cells that stop dividing in meiosis 1B) 2 equally sized cells, but only one that is typically fertilizedC) 2 equally sized cells that are both typically fertilizedD) 2 or 3 small cells and one large cell that develops further if fertilizedarrow_forwardimagine a giraffe whose diploid is 30. A)Under what circumstances would the giraffe go through a process of meiosis? . b) what will be the final result of this meiosis for the giraffe (# of cells + # of chromosomes/cells)arrow_forward
- Draw a schematic diagram showing spermatogenesis vis-à-vis oogenesis. Label the stage of development and chromosome number of daughter cells at the following levels of maturation: (a) mitotic proliferation (b) meiosis I and II (c) maturation. Table 2: Spermatogenesis vis-à-vis Oogenesis Spermatogenesis Oogenesisarrow_forwardSelect the best answer or answers from the choices given: Relative to differences between mitosis and meiosis, choose the statements that apply only to events of meiosis. (a) tetrads present, (b) produces two daughter cells, (c) produces four daughter cells, (d) occurs throughout life, (e) reduces thechromosomal number by half, (f) synapsis and crossover of homologues occur.arrow_forwardA diploid cell has 4C genetic material and 16 chromosomes at the start of cell division. - Human fertilization involves the fusion of two haploid gametes, producing a zygote containing (a) 23 chromosomes. (b) 46 chromosomes. (c) the normal haploid number of chromosomes. (d) 46 pairs of chromosomes.arrow_forwardIn a cell that has just begun the process of meiosis, as shown, what is the probability that a resulting gamete will have only maternally inherited chromosomes? (blue chromosomes are paternally inherited, red are maternally inherited) a) 1/4 b) 1/2 c) 1/8 d) 1/16 e) 1/32arrow_forwardWhich statement does not accurately describe what occurs during the process of meiosis? A) All stages of meiosis follow DNA replication. B) Meiosis produces gametes with the haploid chromosome number. C) Meiosis produces four identical gametes, either egg or sperm. D) Genetic variation among sexually reproducing organisms is enhanced by meiosis. Not Gradedarrow_forward
- If nondisjunction occurs in humans for one pair of homologous chromosomes during meiosis I. The other pairs segregate normally. a) Will any normal gametes result? b) How many chromosomes will each human gametehave? If nondisjunction occurs in humans for sister chromatids during meiosis II. The other pairs segregate normally. a) Will any normal gametes result? b) How many chromosomes will each human gamete have?arrow_forwardA diploid organism produces four gametes from one parent cell through the process of meiosis. Two gametes are found to have 7 chromosomes and two gametes are found to have 5 chromosomes. A) Is this the expected number of chromosomes that would be found in each gamete following a normal cycle of meiosis? If yes, explain why. If no, explain why not and describe how the gamete situation described above occurred. B) Determine the number of homologous chromosome pairs that the original parent cell contained, before meiosis began. Explain how you determined this value.arrow_forwardWhich statement is true of meiosis? 1)two identical cells in both divisions 2)the first division produces haploid cells and the second produces diploid cells 3)the first division produces diploid cells and the second produces haploid cells 4) the products of both meiotic divisions are haploidarrow_forward
