Chapter 46.1, Problem 5R
Summary Introduction

To review:

Human brain size is much above the regression line of ‘brain size as a function of body size’ than other mammals. The reasons why this observation is an underestimation of the cortical capacity of humans compared to other mammals.

Introduction:

There is a correlation between the size of the body and the size of the brain in vertebrates. As the body size increases, the brain size also increases. However, humans lie much above this regression line meaning that they violate this trend.

Scientists studying orangutans on the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra recently found that the subspecies inhibiting the food-scare region of Borneo have smaller brains than those on Sumatra, where food is abundant. From this observation, what can we infer about the relationship brain size and diet in orangutan evolution?
A researcher wishes to determine if vitamin E supplements could increase cognitive ability among elderly women. In 1999 the researcher recruits a sample of elderly women age 75-80. At the time of the enrollment into the study, the women were randomized to either take Vitamin E, or a placebo for six months. At the end of the six month period, the women were given a cognition test. Higher scores on this test indicate better cognition. The mean and standard deviation of the test scores of 81 women who took vitamin E supplements was 27 and 6.9 respectively. The mean and standard deviation of the test scores of the 90 women who took placebo supplements was 24 and 6.2, respectively.C Computea 95% confidence interval for the mean difference in cognition test scores between Vitamin E and placebo group.
In the discussion section the authors wrote “The prevailing hypothesis about the action of tACS is the alternating fields can increase or decrease the power of oscillatory rhythms in the brain, and in a frequency-dependent manner, through synchronizing and desynchronizing neuronal networks [17].”  a. Is the hypothesis a null hypothesis or an alternative/alternative hypothesis?   b. By what word or words do you know that your answer to the question is correct?  c. Why did you choose this word or words as an answer to the question?
