Chapter 47, Problem 3DAA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The longest time interval without a La Nina event.

Concept introduction: El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event is an interaction between the ocean-atmosphere climates, during which irregular temperature fluctuation occurs in the equatorial Pacific Oceans. El Nino and La Nina are the two extremes of this El Nino Southern Oscillation. During an El Nino, warm water flows towards the west coast of South America and during a LA Nina, cold water flows towards the western coast of South America.  Occasionally, the water of the Pacific is neutral.

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance ar etreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era and of human Civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth's orbit that change the amount of solar ene our planet receives. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is very likely human-induced and proceeding at a very rapid rate not seen in the past 1,300 years. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabl- scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. www.om Warming oceans Carbon dioxide levels continue to rise. What pieces of evidence are presented that prove or reinforce the connection between climate change and the changing meteorological pattern? Answer: • Rising global temperatures (EXPLANATION) • Changes in extreme weather event (EXPLANATION) • Changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns (EXPLANATION) • Changes in precipitation patterns (EXPLANATION) • Rising sea levels (EXPLANATION) I need explanation only, thanks
