Question
Chapter 47, Problem 9TYPSS
Summary Introduction
To review:
The experiment that tests the hypothesis that the cells from one region only proceed to form the ectoderm.
Introduction:
Cleavage results in the formation of a mass of cells. The three germ layers are formed by the gastrulation process: the ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm are called the primary germ layers. It is one of the most extensive and important cell processes. Cleavage results in cell shape changes and rearrangement.

One of the earliest experimental embryology experiments was conducted by Wilhelm Roux, who used a hot needle to kill one of the cells in an amphibian embryo at the two-cell stage. In the experiment, the remaining living cell formed only half of an embryo. However, later vertebrate experiments showed that by completely separating cells in early embryos, each can make complete individuals. What could explain the discrepancy in these experiments?
One of the hypotheses is that a chimera formed from the fusion of two separately
fertilized oocytes.

Answer the following:
More recently evolved organisms have modified the stages of embryological development. Would you expect early or late stages to be modified the most? Why?
The basic stages of embryological development are remarkably similar for a wide range of organisms. How would you explain such consistency?
As cells invaginate and move about, do they “know” where they are? If not, how is movement controlled? If so, how do they perceive their position.
Is parental care of a species a factor that affects embryological development? If so, how?

- What statement best describes the difference between "fate maps" and "specification"? If cells are transplanted from their normal region in an embryo to a different region in a recipient embryo, such cells will alter their fate, but not their specification. Cell fate map describes the allocation of cells to the germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm, or endoderm, whereas specification describes the exact tissues that each cell will ultimately become. The fate map of an embryo does not change during development -- the fate map of an egg is the same as the fate map of a late blastula -- whereas the specification map of an embryo changes continually as the embryo's development proceeds. The fate map of a cell is determined by labelling that cell and following it during normal development, whereas the specification state of a cell is determined by culturing a cell in an artificial medium and observing what tissues form from it.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is not true about frogs eggs and blastula formation?
