PROBLEM 4B-6 Step-Down Method versus Direct Method; Predetermined Overhead Rates LO4-10, LO4-11 This Sendai Co., Ltd., of Japan has budgeted costs in its various departments as follows for the coming year.
Factory Administration | $270,000 |
Custodial Services | 68,760 |
Personnel | 28,840 |
Maintenance | 45,200 |
Machining-overhead | 376,300 |
Assembly-overhead | 175.900 |
Total cost | $955,000 |
The company allocates service department costs to other departments in the order listed below.

Feet of Space Occupied | Direct Labor- Hours |
Machine- Hours |

Machining and Assembly are operating departments: the other departments are service departments. Factory Administration is allocated based on labor-hours: Custodial Services based on square feet occupied: Personnel based on number of employees: and Maintenance based on machine-hours.
Required:
- Allocated services department costs to consuming departments by the step-down method. Then compute predetermined overhead rates in the operating departments using machine-hours as the allocated base in Machining and direct labor-hours as the allocation base in Assembly.
- Repeat (1) above, this time using the direct method. Again compute predetermined overhead rates in Machining and Assembly.
- Assume that the company doesn’t bother with allocating service department costs but simply computers a single plantwide overhead rate that divides the total overhead costs (both service department and operating costs) by the total direct labor-hours. Compute the plantwide overhead rate.
- Suppose a job requires machine and labor time as follows:
Machine-Hours | Direct Labour-Hours | |
Machine Department | 190 | 25 |
Assembly Department | 10 | 75 |
Total hours | 200 | 100 |
Using the overhead rates computed in (l). (I), and (3) above, compute the amount of overhead cost that would be assigned to the job if the overhead rates were developed using the step-down method, the direct method, and the plantwide method.

- Budget performance report for a cost center Sneed Industries Company sells vehicle parts to manufacturers of heavy construction equipment. The Crane Division is organized as a cost center. The budget for the Crane Division for the month ended August 31, 20Y6, is as follows (in thousands): During August, the costs incurred in the Crane Division were as follows: Instructions For which costs might the director be expected to request supplemental reports?arrow_forwardRefer to Exercise 8.27. At the end of the year, Meliore, Inc., actually produced 310,000 units of the standard model and 115,000 of the deluxe model. The actual overhead costs incurred were: Required: Prepare a performance report for the period. In an attempt to improve budgeting, the controller for Meliore, Inc., has developed a flexible budget for overhead costs. Meliore, Inc., makes two types of products, the standard model and the deluxe model. Meliore expects to produce 300,000 units of the standard model and 120,000 units of the deluxe model during the coming year. The standard model requires 0.05 direct labor hour per unit, and the deluxe model requires 0.08. The controller has developed the following cost formulas for each of the four overhead items: Required: 1. Prepare an overhead budget for the expected activity level for the coming year. 2. Prepare an overhead budget that reflects production that is 10 percent higher than expected (for both products) and a budget for production that is 20 percent lower than expected.arrow_forwardQuestion 1 Part II Advent Corporation started to produce automated garbage bins. The company uses a standard cost system and determines that it should take two hours of direct labour to produce one garbage bin.The normal production capacity for the company’s bins is 62,500 units per year. The total budgetedoverhead at normal capacity is $450,000 comprised of $200,000 of variable costs and $250,000 of fixedcosts. Advent Corporation applies overhead on the basis of direct labour hours.During the current year, Advent Corporation produced 95,000 bins, worked 99,000 direct labour hours, and incurred variable overhead costs of $265,000 and fixed overhead costs of $326,200. Required:a. Compute the predetermined variable overhead rate and the predetermined fixed overhead rate.b. Compute the applied overhead for Advent for the year. c. Compute the total overhead variance.arrow_forward
