The help desk at Triple Stacked handles calls from customers regarding their high-end industrial switches. The help desk is actually divided into two groups. The first group is called the “Frontline” and it is staffed with 5 people. The second group is called the “Solver” and it is staffed with 3 people. There are three types of calls: “Routine,” “Stumper,” and “Nasty.” All three types are first received by the Frontline desk. A Frontline staffer can resolve a Routine call in 10 minutes. The Frontline staffer also spends 10 minutes with the Stumper and Nasty calls but is unable to resolve those calls in that time. Hence, after 10 minutes, the Frontline staffer forwards the Stumper and Nasty calls to the Solver desk. At the Solver desk a staffer takes 15 minutes to resolve a Stumper call and 30 minutes to resolve a Nasty call. The table below includes the processing times, staffing, and arrival rates for each of the three types of calls:
- (a) What is the implied utilization of each desk?
- (b) What are the actual and maximum flow rates of each type of issue per hour through this process?

- The time from when a patient is discharged from North Shore Hospital to the time the discharged patient’s bed is ready to be assigned to a new patient is referred to as the bed assignment turnaround time. If the bed turnaround time is excessive, it can cause problems with patient flow and delay medical procedures throughout the hospital. This can cause long waiting times for physicians and patients thus creating customer dissatisfaction. The admissions RN has assigned a patient care associate to measure the bed turnaround time for a randomly selected bed each morning., afternoon, and evening for 30 days. Following are the bed turnaround time sample observations: Day Day Bed Turnaround Times (min) 1 1 127 135 167 144 151 2 2 140 155 122 135 119 3 3 112 128 97 118 131 4 4 223 135 154 187 150 5 5 181 155 160 172 166 6 6 103 158 145 124 149 7 7 146 135 167 150 178 8 8 104 122 115 137 129 9 9 136 158 137 148 156 10 10 145 163 106 139 170 11 11 84 146 125 98…arrow_forwardHow many years (t) can we expect to do business with a customer? A wallboard and sticker system was a low-tech solution for identifying equipment items in the yard at Terex. While inexpensive in itself, the solution cost around six minutes every time an employee had to locate a unit in the yard. It also required a considerable number of hours to be spent each month taking physical inventories.
