Chapter 5, Problem 1FP
To determine

The pressure at A and the velocity of the water at B.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The velocity at A (VA) is 6 m/s.

The datum at A (zA) is 3 m

Calculation:

Since the cross section of the pipe is constant throughout the length so the velocity of the pipe also constant at both end.

VA=VB (6m/s).

Thus, velocity at B is 6m/s_.

Apply Bernoulli equation between A and B.

  pAρw+VA22+gzA=pBρw+VB22+zBg        (I)

Here, pA is pressure at A, pB is pressure at B, VA is velocity at A, VB is velocity at B, g is acceleration due to gravity, zA is datum at A, zB is datum at B, ρw is density of water at 5°C.

Substitute ρw=1,000kg/m3, VA=6m/s, g=9.81m/s2, zA=3 m, pB=0, VB=6m/s, and zB=0 in equation (I)

  pA1,000+622×9.81+(3×9.81)=0+622×9.81+0pA1,000+29.43=0pA=29.43×103Pa

  pA=29.43×103Pa×1kPa1,000Pa=29.43kPa

Here, Negative sign indicates partial vacuum at A.

Thus, pressure at A is 29.43kPa_.
