Summary Introduction

Introduction

Many online communities are based on shared interests, such as traditional shaving techniques and products or knitting and crocheting skills. One strength of virtual communication is a sense of belonging and knowing others share the same interest or condition in the case of online support groups. Internet groups are still impersonal if the members never meet face-to-face, in which case the members do not value each other as much as if they had met in person.

Answer and explanation

(This question requires a subjective response, and this is an example.)

I have gained new friends from online groups who share my interest in old style shaving. At first, the online group was a way to get answers to questions related to proper technique with straight razors, or skin care regimens. Gradually, the people in the group became more like friends as we learned about each other and realized we cared about more than just shaving. These friendships are stronger with people I have also met in person, and this speaks to one of the weaknesses of virtual communities. A person in an online club has less value to me if I only encounter them there, and so I may be less likely to give them the benefit of the doubt if we disagree over politics, for example. Even though online groups are impersonal, they do provide support in terms of a feeling of belonging to something. One of the strengths of these groups is that they are able to muster support for a member who is having a hard time due to health or other misfortune. These groups can raise money from other members to help the stricken member with medical bills, for example.
