A rectangular block twice as high as it is wide is resting on a board. The coefficient of static friction between board and incline is 0.63. If the board’s inclination angle is gradually increased, will the block first tip over or first begin sliding?
A person places a bathroom scale in the center of the floor and stands on the scale with his arms at his sides. If he keeps his arms rigid and quickly moves them up and over his head, he notices the scale reading increase as he brings his arms upward. Why? Then, with his arms over his head, he quickly lowers his arms to his side. How does the scale reading change and why? (Try it yourself)

The ladder just overhangs a plastic rain gutter, which we can assume to be frictionless, so the force from the gutter on the ladder acts perpendicularly to the ladder. As a result, the top of the ladder experiences a normal force at an angle, while the bottom of the ladder experiences both a vertical normal force and a horizontal friction force. The center of mass of the ladder is 2 m from the bottom. The person is standing 3 m from the bottom. a.) What is the magnitude of the net force on the ladder at the top?
