Concept Introduction:
Hybridization is the mixing of valence atomic orbitals to get equivalent hybridized orbitals that having similar characteristics and energy.
Bond length is the distance between the nuclei in a bond and it is related to the sum of the covalent radii at the bonded atoms.
Sigma (σ) bonds are the bonds in which shared hybrid orbital’s electron density are concentrated along the internuclear axis.
Pi (π) bonds are the bonds in which shared unhybridized orbital’s (p, d, etc) electron density are concentrated in above and below of the plane of the molecule.

- Fluorene is essentially non-polar. Briefly explain, with respect to atoms that are present and absent in fluorene, and their relative electronegativities, why fluorene is non-polar.arrow_forwardSpecify whether the two structures are resonance contributors to the same resonance hybrid. Be sure to explain your reasoning. If yes, be sure to specify which is preferred and why. H2C=NH2arrow_forwardProvide the major resonance forms for the molecule shownarrow_forward
- Choose from the 6 structures presented below. You may choose more than one choice if necessary.arrow_forwardAn electrostatic potential map of calicene is shown below. a) Both the electrostatic potential map and its significant dipole moment indicate that calicene is an unusually polar hydrocarbon. Which of the dipolar resonance forms, structure A or structure B, better corresponds to the electron distribution in the molecule? Select the single best answer. b) Which one of the following structures should be stabilized by resonance to a greater extent? Select the single best answer.arrow_forwardHow do you find the hydridization of the carbon atoms in the resonance hybrid of benzene?arrow_forward
- LYRICA (pregabalin) is an oral pharmaceutical primarily indicated for the management of fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain. At a pH of 11, LYRICA has an overall charge of –1, with most atoms neutral and only one oxygen showing a –1 formal charge. The structure for LYRICA at pH 11 is shown below. Add all the missing lone pairs to the given structure of LYRICA.arrow_forwardFour major contributing resonance structures are possible for the given cation, which is the intermediate o complex of an electrophilic aromatic substitution involving phenol and bromine. Two structures are given but are incomplete. Complete the given structures by adding nonbonding electrons and formal charges. Draw the remaining structures (in any order), including nonbonding electrons and formal charges. Complete structure A.
