Concept introduction:

Ideal gas: A hypothetical gas whose molecules occupy negligible space and have no interactions, and which consequently obeys the gas law exactly.

Ideal gas equation: An equation describes the relationship among the four variables P, V, T, and n.

PV=nRT

The unit of each term in the equation is,

Where, R is proportionality constant called gas constant (atm.L/mol.K)

V is volume (L)

n is number of moles (moles)

P is Pressure (atm)

T is temperature (K)

Standard temperature and pressure: The conditions 0oC and 1atm are called standard atmospheric conditions.

The ideal gas equation is, PV=nRT(1)

Where, R is proportionality constant called gas constant (atm.L/mol.K)

V is volume (L)

N is number of moles (moles)

P is Pressure (atm)

T is temperature (K)

Given:

At STP,

Volume, V1=488mL=488×10-3L;

Pressure, P1= 1atm

Temperature, T1 = 0oC=0oC+273=273K

At non-standard conditions,

Volume, V2 =?;

Pressure, P2 = 22.5atm

Temperature, T2 = 150oC=150oC+273=423K

Substituting the known values into the equation below as follows,

P1V1=nRT1andP2V2=nRT2

By combing both mentioned above equation,

P1V1=nRT1andP2V2=nRT2P1V1P2V2=nRT1nRT2P1V1P2V2=T1T2

On substituting,

P1V1P2V2=T1T2(1atm)(488×10-3L)(22.5atm)(V2)=273K423K=0.704491V2=(0.34539)(22.5)(488×10-3L)V2=(488×10-3L)(0.34539)(22.5)=488×10-3L14.52127=33.6×10-3L

Therefore, the volume obtained is, 33.6×10-3L

Note: As the pressure is increased, the volume decreases. The obtained value of volume is less than the initial volume. Hence, the obtained value is reliable.
