(a)
To evaluate:
An experiment was designed and conducted to analyze the uptake of sucrose in the plant cells. (a) The hypothesis for the decrease in pH, if plant cells are immersed in a sucrose solution. (b) The result obtained, if an inhibitor of the ATP regeneration was added in the beaker once the pH reached a steady level.
Introduction:
The plant cells were immersed in a sucrose solution in a beaker. The movement of the sucrose and water ions will take place by the process of diffusion and osmosis respectively in the beaker. The hypothesis given by the scientists proposes the movement of the hydrogen and sucrose ions inside the plant cells through the plasma membrane with the help of the co-transporter protein channels.
To evaluate: The hypothesis for the decrease in pH, if the plant cells are immersed in a sucrose solution.
(b)
To determine: The result that was obtained, if an inhibitor of ATP regeneration was added in the beaker once the pH reached a steady level.

- Suppose you are given a container that has a membrane permeable only to metabolic wastes. The container is filled with 5 M metabolic waste in an aqueous solution. You wish to reduce the amount of waste dissolved in the container. You see a 5 L beaker of pure water sitting across the room on a shelf. What is your plan?arrow_forwardConsider a cell membrane. In order to survive, the cell must move nutrients across the membrane and it must move waste products out of the membrane. Describe the strategies available to the cell for the transport of materials. Describe these strategies. Indicate what happens when equilibrium is reached for each strategy.arrow_forward1. Channel proteins used for the bulk passage of water molecules across the cell membrane?2. The tonicity of the extracellular fluid that maintains the turgid appearance of plant cells?3. The tonicity of the extracellular environment causing plasmolysis of plant cells?4. Plant cells are said to be flaccid in this type of cellular environment or solution?arrow_forward
- 1.Base on your understanding of plant and animal cell osmosis, what condition do you think plant cells prefer? 2. What condition do you think animal cells prefer? Consider the question: How is solute concentration related to the change in the weight of plant cells (like potato cells)? 5. Write a hypothesis from the above question. Write one if statement and make three predictions(then statements) regarding how the cell will change (weight) in (1) hypertonic,(2) hypotonic, and (3) isotonic conditions:arrow_forward(2) a. Movement as a bulk due to pressure changes d. Absorption through permeable membranesarrow_forwardDesign an experiment to study the effect of solvent on the integrity of the membrahe of carrot-root cells. Remember that carrot contains carotenoids which include the yellow-orange colored pigments which can be collectively measured by a spectrophotometer at 450 nm. A Lipids are the primary component, and they repel and prevent excess uptake of water because they form carbon chains. B Lipids are the primary component, and they protect the cell and help maintain its shape because they form carbon rings. C Carbohydrates are the primary component, and they repel and prevent excess uptake of water because they form carbon chains. D Carbohydrates are the primary component, and they protect the cell and help maintain its shape because they form carbon rings.arrow_forward
- Why should it not be surprising that for many cells water requires a protein for its transport across a membrane? A. There is never a concentration gradient for water across the membrane to drive its transport. B. The transport protein is needed to prevent the hydrolysis of the phospholipid chains as water crosses the membrane. C. Water is very polar which inhibits its free diffusion across the membrane. D. All molecules require transport proteins to cross a membrane. In the mitochondria phosphate ion (PO43-) and H+ are transported together from the intermembrane space into the matrix. Which statement applies? A. The interior of the transport protein must be uncharged. B. The transport protein must have a relatively large central channel to accommodate both ions. C. The transport protein is a symport. D. All of the abovearrow_forwardExamine the plant cell shown below, and answer the following questions about it. A.
