Two boxes are at rest on a smooth, horizontal surface. The boxes are in contact with one another. If box 1 is pushed with a force of magnitude F = 12.00 N , the contact force between the boxes is 8.50 N; if, instead, box 2 is pushed with the force F, the contact force is 12.00 N − 8.50 N = 3.50 N. In either case, the boxes move together with an acceleration of 1.70 m/s2. What is the mass of (a) box 1 and (b) box 2?

- A bag of cement weighing 325 N hangs in equilibrium from three wires as suggested in Figure P4.23. Two of the wires make angles 1 = 60.0 and 2 = 40.0 with the horizontal. Beginning at t = 0, when the object passes position x = 0, it experiences a net resistive force proportional to the square of its speed: Fnet=mkv2i, where k is a constant. The speed of the object after t = 0 is given by v = vi/(1 + kvit). (a) Find the position x of the object as a function of time.
