Chapter 50, Problem 16PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

The cost–benefit analysis of the use of sonar-generated sound waves by the military on the whales.

Introduction:

The military actions do not require clearance under the environmental impact assessment (EIA). It is an established fact that their actions are affecting the behavioral patterns of whales. They use sonars to send and receive signals and, thus, in this way they keep a watch over the sea and oceans against foreign or militant attack. The military off-shore operations interfere with their communication. The researchers found that the whales increase their speed and change directions when they come in contact with the sound and rush toward beach.

What is the biggest reason we use animals in research? a. Animals have simple behavior that makes it easy to see changes. b. Animals don’t live as long as humans. c. We can do things to animals that we can’t do to people. d. Animals are easier to control.
Question 2) : You observe a species ingesting a plant that has some medical benefits. What simple experiment could you do to find out if that behavior is a genetically determined biological adaptation or a medical practice? (hint: your answer should also contain what the difference between the two is)
It’s sometimes said that the reason an animal does something is that it’s “for the good of the species.” Why is this argument incorrect?
