Concept introduction: The speciation and development of fledglings of birds include the designing of experiments in which different songs are played near the fledglings. They get oriented towards the songs, but are not allowed to hear the real bird sounds and voices, for example in the white-crowned sparrow. The fledglings then learn the songs from the group of birds, which gets imprinted in their memory and they recognize it. This song patterns are learned much faster than the artificial songs played during the experiments. This is called as the “learned behavior” in birds.

- MAKE CONNECTIONS Balancing selection can maintain variation at a locus (see Concept 23.4). Based on theforaging experiments described in this chapter, devise asimple hypothesis to explain the presence of both for Rand forsalleles in natural fly populationsarrow_forward1. How does anatomical fossil evidence helps scientists connect lines of evidence for evolutionary relationships between species? Example and explanation 2 How does anatomical evidence provide clues about the ecological role a species plays in its environment? Example and explanationarrow_forwardQ1: Within which category are individuals most closely related to one another? Q2: Within which category are individual species most distantly related? Q3: Are individual species more closely related within the same order or within the same family?arrow_forward
- 2. Hypothesize why a dry and unpredictable habitat favors r-selected species. Support your hypothesis with at least two arguments.arrow_forwardMAke ConneCtIonS Suppose that a sudden changein environmental conditions caused a substantial dropin a population’s carrying capacity. Predict how naturalselection and genetic drift might affect this population.(See Concept 23.3.)arrow_forward. Summarize key differences between allopatric and sympatric speciation. Which type of speciation is more common, and why?arrow_forward
- Differentiate allopatric versus sympatric speciation. Provide your own example to explain both type of speciation.arrow_forward1. Captive breeding programs can reestablish the populations of threatened species in the wild, but they failed in all cases. True or False? 2. Analogy is similarity due to convergent or parallel evolution. True or False?arrow_forwardMAKE CONNECTIONS Hawaiian silverswords underwent a remarkable adaptive radiation after their ancestor reached Hawaii, while the islands were still young(see Figure 25.22). Would you expect the cattle egretto undergo a similar adaptive radiation in the Americas(see Figure 52.18)? Explain.arrow_forward
- 3. Briefly describe allopatric and sympatric speciation and provide a real-world example of each.arrow_forward1) Choose 2 of the four evolutionary forces and explain it in your own words with an example. 2) Explain punctuated equilibrium in your own words and give an example.arrow_forwardReview why you might see a cline across a geographical area. Explain why you are more likely to see a cline when there is gene flow between populations. What could happen if the gene flow becomes restricted across a cline? Explain.arrow_forward
