Chapter 53, Problem 1S
Summary Introduction

To determine:

If a predator has an innate avoidance of insects that have yellow or black coloration, or if the avoidance is learned. If avoidance is learned, how the learning mechanism is determined. Also, how the adaptive significance of the black and yellow coloration to the prey is measured.

Introduction:

Behavior in an animal can sometimes develop from previous experiences through learning. In associative learning, a behavior is modified or conditioned through the associations between stimuli and its response. There are two types of associative learning: classical conditioning and operant conditioning.

Animals have evolved a range of strategies to successfully respond to threats and challenges. One of these strategies is the ability to learn. As we discussed, not every animal can learn and there are clear costs and benefits to this strategy. Suggest one benefit of the ability to learn and one potential cost. Briefly explain each. (1-2 sentences for each)  Since learning is not universal, under which circumstances would it be most likely be a successful strategy? We discussed a framework that examines the influence of predictability on the success of learning ability. Describe this framework. Make sure you discuss all the available conditions and clearly state under which we would expect learning to be successful and where we would not expect it to be successful.  What would be an alternative strategy to regulate behaviour when learning is not suitable? Briefly explain your choice. (2-3 sentences)
Which of the following questions is most closely associated with anultimate cause of a behavior?a. How does a squid alter its color to blend in with its environment?b. How does a hummingbird’s body shape influence its ability tohover?c. How do alarm calls affect prairie dog fitness?d. Which cues do monarch butterflies use during migration?
In an investigation of fruit fly behavior, an enclosed choice chamber was used to test whether the spatial distribution of flies is affected by the presence of a substance placed at one end of the chamber. To test the flies’ preference for different substances, 50 flies were introduced into the choice chamber. A piece of ripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side A and a piece of unripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side B (Figure 1). The positions of the flies were observed and recorded at the start of the experiment and after 10 minutes (Table 1).
