Chapter 56, Problem 15TYK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The test that can differentiate between the genetic and the environmental basis for the movement of fruit flies toward the citrus oil.
Introduction:
The traits in fruit flies or any organism are present as a result of inheritance of the parental genes or changes incorporated due to the change in environment. These changes, which occur in an organism, may be beneficial or harmful for the organism.

Scientists have discovered a new species of bird in Mexico that migrates South to the Amazon rainforest to breed. How wouldthis migration behavior be studied?
B. Propose an exoeriemt to
Test the function of these migratory neurons in birds brain
In an investigation of fruit fly behavior, an enclosed choice chamber was used to test whether the spatial distribution of flies is affected by the presence of a substance placed at one end of the chamber. To test the flies’ preference for different substances, 50 flies were introduced into the choice chamber. A piece of ripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side A and a piece of unripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side B (Figure 1). The positions of the flies were observed and recorded at the start of the experiment and after 10 minutes (Table 1).
You are a biologist working in the Amazon and you discover two new types of bird that are very similar in appearance. You want to know if they are the same species or different species. Other than looking at anatomy or DNA samples (which wouldn’t necessarily give you the answer anyway), what behavior could you look at to find out? LIMIT YOUR ANSWER TO ONE SENTENCE

During your time in Africa, you have observed two particular traits that allow some black rhinos to be better adapted to their environment. The first trait is an extra-long prehensile lip that enables the rhino to have more efficient browsing capabilities than rhinos with the usual size prehensile lip. Second, some of the rhinos in the study have extra-large ears that allow them to hear a potential predator earlier than rhinos with normal size ears. If you could breed black rhinos that have both of these good traits (an extra-long prehensile lip (P) and bigger ears (E), it wouldincrease their chance for survival in the wild. You have chosen the following two rhinos to enter into a breeding program for the two desired phenotypic traits. It has been determined (based on your previous research) that both the desired traits are homozygous recessive. Parent 1: Heterozygous dominant for prehensile lip trait. Heterozygous for the longer…arrow_forward
