To explain:
A 22-year-old woman with severe acne is receiving counseling before taking isotretinoin (Amnesteem). She has read the online iPLEDGE information and is shocked to see that two negative pregnancy test results are required before starting the therapy and a pregnancy test must be performed monthly during the therapy. What is the nurse’s best answer to the patient’s concern?
Concept introduction:
Isotretinoin is the most commonly used antiacne drug. It is an oral product which is specifically indicated for treating severe resistant cystic acne. It has antiinflammatory and antikeratinizing effects and also inhibits the activity of the sebaceous glands. This medication should not be administered by childbearing female patients as it could induce birth defects in the child.
