Chapter 56, Problem 7TYU
Summary Introduction
Introduction: The ecosystem present in a water body is known as aquatic ecosystem. It is of two types, namely marine ecosystem, and fresh water ecosystems. There are three main ecological categories of organisms present in both fresh water and marine ecosystems. These are plankton, nekton, and benthos.

With respect to planktonic communities in the ocean, which ONE of the following statements is correct?
a.
Population numbers of plankton species vary over time, but in particular places are consistent
b.
Population numbers of plankton species are consistent over time, but vary from place to place
c.
The diversity of planktonic communities is constantly changing, and dominance by any one group is always correlated with one or more environmental factors
d.
The diversity of planktonic communities is stable over time, and no one group ever achieves dominance
e.
The diversity of planktonic communities is constantly changing, and dominance by any one group is not correlated with any environmental factor
Thinking Analytically
Considering the fact that we have already found more than 20,000 deep-sea marine species and we have only explored a few percent of the deep ocean, how many total species do you think there may be in the deep sea?

- The resource page discusses an increasing threat of nuisance flooding in North Carolina. To understand what nuisance flooding is, you have to have a basic understanding of tides. How are tides generated and propagated around ocean basins? Explain how the factors that control tides change over the course of one month and tie that back to the problems with nuisance flooding. Back in the lab, she places all the beetles in a warm, dry environmental chamber and measures water loss across the cuticle. There are a wide variety of organisms that inhabit the pelagic zone. Phytoplankton float along the surface, using photosynthesis to produce food. Zooplankton are tiny organisms that float in the surface waters and feed on the abundant phytoplankton. Krill, small crustaceans, also feed on phytoplankton. They display vertical migration in which they swim at deeper depths during the day and then come up to the surface waters at night to eat.
