To review:
The effect, which the sea cucumbers have on the amount of total organic carbon (TOC) contained in sediments in the experimental tanks and how it relates to nutrient cycling.
Given:
The TOC (percentage of sediment dry weight) for an experiment for weeks (1–8 weeks) was measured for control tanks and sea cucumber grazed tanks and plotted against as a graph.
Introduction:
Nutrient cycling refers to the cycling of nutrients through biogeochemical cycles. It involves both biological and chemical changes. There are many different types of nutrient cycles that operate in nature. Carbon is an organic compound which is present in living organisms. The death and decomposition of organic matter as well as processes such as respiration leads to release of carbon into the atmosphere. Huge amounts of carbon are stored in marine sediments.

- (D) đecreased leaf growth (E) increased nitrate in the soil Questions 47-49: QU Refer to the next food web shown. The numbers indicate the concentrations of an organic pesticide measured in parts per million. Ospreys (20 ppm) Mussels Fish (0.5 ppm) (0.4 ppm) Water (0.00002 pPpm) Plankton (0.03 ppm) 47. The pesticide concentration in the top trophic level of the food web is how many times greater than the pesticide concentration in the water? (A) 1,000,000 (D) 60,000 (B) 300,000 (E) 2,000 (C) 100,000 48. Which of the organisms in the food web are exclusively carnivorous? (B) Ospreys only (A) Plankton only (C) Fish only wwwarrow_forwardLiving organisms play an important role in the recycling of many elements within an ecosystem. Discuss how various types of organisms and their biochemical reactions contribute to the recycling of water in an ecosystem. Discuss both biochemistry and ecology in your answer. Include in your answer at least one way in which human activity has an impact on this nutrient cycle. What are the main reservoirs of water in the biosphere?arrow_forwardThe average efficiency of energy transfer between trophic levels is 10%. Use this efficiency to determine how much phytoplankton mass is required to add just 1 gram (0.04 ounce) of new mass to a killer whale, which is a third-level or top carnivore. Create a diagram that summarizes the different trophic levels and the relative size and abundance of organisms at each level. How would your answer change if the efficiency were half the average rate? Twice the average rate?arrow_forward
- How does the release of large amounts of phosphorus by humans cause problems?arrow_forwardIf the N and P content of some algae is as shown in the following table. The third column shows nutrient available in the water. Nutrient Nitrogen Phosphorus (a) (b) mg nutrient/g of algae Available, mg/L 0.62 80 6.9 0.15 What percent reduction in nitrogen is needed to control algal production to 1.0 mg/L? What percent reduction in phosphorus is needed to control algal production to 1.0 mg/L?arrow_forwardWhich nitrogen flux is incorrectly described? O nitrification is the conversion of ammonium to nitrates nitrogen mineralization is the conversion of organic nitrogen to inorganic nitrogen nitrogen immo bilization is the conversion of ammonium to metamorphic rock O denitrification is the conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas O nitrogen fixation is the conversion of nitrogen gas to bioavailable forms of nitrogenarrow_forward
- Students from Westbury High School participated in a study of the Willow Waterhole Pond. After safely taking samples of some small fish, a fish-eating hawk, some pond water, some zooplankton, and a fish that preys on the small fish, they determined the average concentration of compound "Z" in each sample. The table below summarizes their data. Build a food chain that illustrates the correct trophic order in the pond. Include the concentrations of compound "Z" for each part of the chain. Describe one natural process that would cause compound "Z" to contaminate the pond's water. (Please write in complete sentences.)arrow_forwardIt has been suggested that cheap electricity generated from tides, waves, or currents could be used to pump nutrient-rich water from thedeep. The water could then be used to grow algae to feed the larvae offarmed fishes and invertebrates. How else could this energy be usedto decrease the costs of aquaculture?arrow_forwardDescribe a nitrogen cycle that could take place in the picture above. Describe how nitrogen could move from an abiotic element of the system to a biotic element and back.arrow_forward
- Nutrient cycling in aquatic vs terrestrial systems differ because: a) Aquatic systems store lower proportions of carbon and nutrients in detritus than terrestrial systems b) Water flow alters how nutrients move within streams, which affects nutrient retentiveness c) both d) neitherarrow_forwardNitrogen is often the limiting nutrient (that is, the nutrient in shortest supply relative to demand) across a wide range of ecosystems. This is because: a. nitrogen compounds like ammonia are rapidly stored in rocks and sediments. O b. most nitrogen is in the form of N2, which only specialized bacteria can fix into accessible forms. О с. there is very little nitrogen on Earth, compared with other nutrients. O d. decomposers don't return nitrogen to a usable form.arrow_forwardBelow you are provided with two scenarios of how excess nutrients can enter water systems. For each scenario, water must begin in the atmosphere, as a gas. Using a minimum of 3 stages of the water cycle, complete the process to illustrate each of the scenarios. It is recommended to write the steps out chronologically as well. 1. How do fertilizers or pesticides placed on farmland infiltrate the soil and the aquifer, in relation to the water cycle? 2. Heavy rainfall has the ability to move fertilizers and surface pollutants to other areas, such as the Ocean. Diagram this process using a minimum of 3 water cycle stages, beginning in the atmosphere.arrow_forward
