Chapter 5.9, Problem 3CYU
Summary Introduction

To write:

The location and functions of the three neural systems involved in the sleep-wake cycle.

Introduction:

Human body has a 24-hour internal clock. This clock regulates a number of processes such as sleep-wake cycles. During the rapid eye movement or REM sleep, the brainstem areas are usually inhibited. But during wake and slow-wake sleep (SWS), these become active. Incidentally, the ascending projections from the cholinergic neurons in the brainstem trigger the thalamus that in turn, increases the neurons firing in the cortex. This physiological modification from a deep sleep state to wakefulness is reversible and facilitated by the ARAS.
