Figure 6-22 shows the cross section of a road cut into the side of a mountain. The solid line AA′ represents a weak bedding plane along which sliding is possible. Block B directly above the highway is separated from uphill rock by a large crack (called a joint), so that only friction between the block and the bedding plane prevents sliding. The mass of the block is 1.8 × 107 kg, the dip angle θ of the bedding plane is 24°, and the coefficient of static friction between block and plane is 0.63. (a) Show that the block will not slide under these circumstances. (b) Next, water seeps into the joint and expands upon freezing, exerting on the block a force

- The angle of inclination of the wedge and block is 25°. The angle of friction all contact surface is 17°. Determine the P required to pull the wedge from under the 500 N block if the block is against the wall. Assume rough contact surfaces.arrow_forwardA 2.0 kg piece of wood slides on a curved surface . The sides of the surface are perfectly smooth, but the rough horizontal bottom is 30 m long and has a kinetic friction coefficient of 0.20 with the wood. The piece of wood starts from rest 4.0 m above the rough bottom. (a) Where will this wood eventually come to rest? (b) For the motion from the initial release until the piece of wood comes to rest, what is the total amount of work done by friction?arrow_forwardA 5 kg box rests on a tabletop. On one side, it compresses a spring with a stiffness of 1000 N/m by 1 cm. If the friction force cancels out the force of the spring what must be the minimum coefficient of static friction between the box and table to keep the box from moving?arrow_forward
- An object hangs between two walls which are 1.8 m apart. If the rope sags 15° below horizontal and the object’s mass is 1.5 kg, what is the tension in the rope?arrow_forwardA rectangular block has a length that is six times its width and a height that is three times its width. The block's surfaces are all identical except for size. When the block is placed on a horizontal tabletop so that the area in contact with the table is length ✕ width, it is found that a horizontal force of 11.6 N applied to the block is just sufficient to overcome the static friction force and cause the block to move. The block is then knocked over so that the area in contact with the table is length ✕ height. Now, what minimum horizontal force will cause the block to move?arrow_forwardA 50.7 kg box is resting on a horizontal floor. A force of 317.1 N directed at an angle of 34.1° below the horizontal is applied to the box. The coefficient of static friction between the box and the surface is 0.5, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.2. The force of friction on the box is:arrow_forward
- Sally wants to hang up some decorations on the side of her house, so she props up a ladder of length L = 3m against a wall at an angle of θ = 50° with respect to the horizontal. The ground is somewhat icy, where the coefficient of static friction between the ground and the ladder’s feet is µ = 0.55; while the wall of her house can be considered frictionless. If Sally has a mass of 60kg and the ladder has a mass of 80kg, what is the max distance that she can climb up the length of the ladder without it slipping? You may assume the ground is perfectly flat, and the wall is perpendicular to the ground.arrow_forwardThe coefficient of static friction between a block of mass m and an incline is = 0•3. (a) What can be the maximum angle e of the incline with the horizontal so that the block does not slip on the plane ? (b) If the incline makes an angle 8/2 with the horizontal, find the frictional force on the block.arrow_forwardA block of wood with mass, 1.20 kg, is held stationary by your friend near the top of a ramp such that it is 1 m above the foor. The sloping surface of the ramp makes a 12 degree angle with the foor. If the coeffcient of kinetic friction for the block-ramp interface is 0.100, how long will it take the block to reach the foor after your friend releases it?arrow_forward
- A plastic box is sitting on a steel beam. One end of the steel beam is slowly raised, increasing the angle of the surface until the box begins to slip. If the box begins to slip when the beam is at an angle of 41 degrees, what is the static coefficient of friction between the steel beam and the plastic box? 41°arrow_forwardThree rectangular boxes are stacked on top of each other. All the boxes have the same mass of 1.2 kg. The kinetic coefficients of friction between the boxes are all 0.6 and the static coefficient of friction between boxes is 0.7. There is no friction between the bottom box and the floor. A rope is attached to the lowest box and pulls on the lowest box with a force of 5.0 N. Suppose the force on the rope is slowly increased. How large can the force be before the boxes begin to slide on each other? a) 12.0 N b) 24.7 N c) 45.3.N d) 18.2 Narrow_forwardYou are a member of an alpine rescue team and must get a box of supplies, with mass 2.10 kg, up an incline of constant slope angle 30.0° so that it reaches a stranded skier who is a vertical distance 2.90 m above the bottom of the incline. There is some friction present; the kinetic coefficient of friction is 6.00×10-2. Since you can't walk up the incline, you give the box a push that gives it an initial velocity; then the box slides up the incline, slowing down under the forces of friction and gravity. Take acceleration due to gravity to be 9.81 m/s². Part A Use the work-energy theorem to calculate the minimum speed that you must give the box at the bottom of the incline so that it will reach the Express your answer numerically, in meters per second. ► View Available Hint(s) V= ΕΠΙΑΣΦΑ A20 ^ ? m/sarrow_forward
